The publication is part of the project: DFG - Research Unit 402: Functionality in a tropical mountain forest: Diversity, dynamic processes and utilization potentials under ecosystem perspectives.
The project joins biologists, geoscientists and researchers in forestry and social anthropology in a multidisciplinary and comprehensive ecosystem study of a mountain rainforest in South Ecuador that extends from about 1200 to 3000 m a.s.l. at the northern edge of the Podocarpus National Park. Pristine forests in the study area provide opportunities for comparisons with several types of degraded forests reflecting small- to large-scale human impact. In addition to an analysis of the various ecosystems, a major aim of the project is the development and implementation of reforestation methods using native trees including recommendations for a sustainable use of the indigenous forests.
ECOTROPICAL MONOGRAPHS No. 4 summarizes the current knowledge on the organismic diversity found in the study area since 1997 by providing checklists for a wide range of taxa, ranging from fungi, lichens, mosses, and higher plants to mammals, birds, various insect taxa, mites and amoeba.
